Drinking Coffee Is Good for You — Or Is It?

Several recent studies have found new potential benefits from drinking coffee. One study found that the risks of cirrhosis of the liver was reduced, and other studies found reductions in type 2 diabetes and even a lower risk of tinnitus (chronic ringing In the ears).

Now a recent study from the Yale School of Public Health found that drinking at least four cups of coffee a day reduce the risk of developing melanoma. The study’s conclusion: even modest coffee consumption, coupled with other changes in lifestyle related to exposure to the sun, can significantly reduce the mortality associated with melanoma.

But wait ….. A 2013 Mayo Clinic Proceedings article said researchers think that drinking four cups of coffee a day may raise the risk of premature death. Another study found that just two cups a day increases the chances of urinary incontinence in men.

So, just like the reports of the health benefits of drinking red wine, and consuming bran muffins every day, reports of the health benefits of coffee should be taken with a grain of salt. Wait a minute, what about the risks of salt consumption? We’ll cover that in another blog post.
